Camping Said World To End Saturday, Rapture Does Not Come

We have heard it all before. People have always been claiming that the world was on the verge of coming to an end.

Pope Innocent III believed that the world would end in the year 1284. Isaac Newton said that the world would reach its judgment day in the year 2060. Some have predicted the end of the world to come way back in the first millennium AD. Others predict the end to come as deep into the future as the year 5079. And of course we are all familiar with the highly feared Mayan Doomsday believed to be coming on December 21st, 2012.

And then there is Harold Camping.

The religious preacher from Oakland, California said that on Saturday, May 21st, 2010, God would bring about the Rapture and take into the Heavens two hundred million people, or three percent of the world population.

Camping said that the world would come to an end five months later on October 21st.

The preacher said that earthquakes would wave through the planet, taking out civilization and the human race. Camping said the activity would begin at 6 pm in New Zealand and sweep westward for the rest of the day striking as 6 pm rung in at every location.

Camping, who is 89 years of age, called his daughter early Saturday morning and said to her, “I’m a little bewildered that it didn’t happen, but it’s still May 21,” in America.

Many people believed in Camping’s warning. Reports of people quitting jobs, leaving their loved ones, and spending time to warn others have poured in. Many of those people are now angry with Camping and Family Radio in Sacramento, California.

Others never took him seriously to begin with.

The thought that earthquakes would occur at every fault line in the world in one day just did not seem possible. The thought that the earthquakes would occur at 6 pm at every time zone seemed illogical. Some time zones are not even accurate as they were scuffed for border reasons. And of course the thought of the Rapture and God swooping up millions of people is simply something that millions of people do not believe in.

Many made light of the claim. One popular joke circulating was whether Ryan Seacrest would be doing a live countdown on the East Coast and the West Coast or if the West Coast would just get a tape delay of the countdown.

Whether you believed Camping or not, his prediction for Saturday has proven to be wrong. Do we direct our eyes on December 21st, 2012 now?

  1. Matthew 24:36
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

-This and all predictions of the world ending on a certain day, is calling Jesus himself a liar. Jesus stated that nobody not even Him knows the day or hour, only God himself does. If Jesus doesnt know the day and hour, how does any man on earth think he’s smarter, and is wiser than Jesus?
