In June of 2009, Bret Michaels took part in the 2009 Tony Awards, which were aired on CBS television. During the event, there was an equipment mishap where a piece of the stage set was moving downward while Michaels was under it. The piece of the set ended up hitting the rock singer and the reality TV star on the head, injuring him.
Now, almost two whole years later, Michaels and his legal team have made the decision to file a lawsuit this past week. The lead singer of Poison is being represented in the case by his attorney, Alex Weingarten.
Weingarten told reporters that Michaels and his legal team were not happy about how the Tony Awards executives and producers handled the situation. He told reporters that after the piece of the set hit Michaels in the head, the people in charge of the award show did not respond properly. He said, “instead of doing the right thing,” they “joked about it and played it off for ratings.”
Michaels was seriously injured in the accident. Reports came out that as a result of the incident, he was close to losing his life. Weingarten said that Michaels did not want to sue, but at the end of the day he can’t just let the Tony Awards executives get away without owning up to their mistake.
Michaels told reporters that he was never once told about the moving set and was never told where to stand on the set. He was only told how to exit the stage after his segment concluded. He was told to exit from the back of the stage, exactly where the piece of the set was coming down.
Once he was done performing his band’s most memorable song, “Nothin’ But a Good Time,” the set began to move and the accident happened. He fell to the ground and suffered a broken nose. His lip was also cut and he had to have three stitches as a result.
Michaels is angry that not only was he hurt due to the poor directions given to him by the Tony Awards people, but that after the incident the executives told reporters that it was Michaels who made the mistake.
Since the incident, Michaels has suffered through some poor health including a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Even though Michaels does not want to cause anyone any problems, he cannot simply sit back and take the blame for an accident that was not his fault.
