Los Angeles, CA (Obama.net) – Joining fellow technology celebrities Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, Andy Grove, former Intel CEO, and Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2010. Citing the fact that Facebook has engrained itself within the American way of life and really the day to day lives of people around the world has led Time Magazine to make Zuckerberg this year’s honoree.
Zuckerberg is the second youngest person to win this prestigious award, following only Charles Lindbergh who won it way back in 1927. Zuckerberg’s fame has increased exponentially this past year with his story of how he created the social phenomenon website portrayed on the big screen in David Fincher’s film “The Social Network.”
In addition to the release of this movie Zuckerberg made other headlines throughout the year, both good and bad. One of the positive things people will remember about the internet mogul this past year is the fact that he donated $100 million to help improved the public schools in Newark, N.J. This gesture went a long way in helping repair the damage caused by the other newsworthy item people will remember about Facebook this year, which is the FTC investigation about the company’s privacy policy. Many Facebook users were concerned that their personal information was being misused by the social networking company in order to benefit their marketing practices. After making several changes to its privacy policy, Facebook was able to offer users much more control over which applications have access to certain personal data. This change has seemed to keep most users happy and quieted the uproar.
With 41.1 million minutes spent on Facebook in the month of August, it does not look like this social media giant will be going anywhere soon, and is extremely likely to continue to be a part of many American’s daily lives for years to come.
