Wednesday night, Joaquin Phoenix made a return to the Late Show with David Letterman one year after making what could at best be called an awkward appearance.

One year ago, Phoenix came onto the show and gave short answers while presenting a full beard. Now, the truth is out that Phoenix put on an act for what turned out not to be an actual documentary on his part entitled “I’m Still Here.”

When he spoke to Phoenix Wednesday, Letterman told him, “A year and a half ago you come out, and honestly it was like you slipped and hit your head in the tub.”

Phoenix appeared less than normal last year on the "Late Show"Letterman also told him that he saw him as a “powerful talent” and that he has always liked the actor.

Letterman also said that he knew from the start that Phoenix was putting on a show last year due to the fact that “if you were really the way you appeared to be, you don’t go out. People don’t let guys like you out if you’re really liked that.”

To that, Phoenix could only say, “like you said, you’ve interviewed many, many people, and I assumed you would know the difference between a character and a real person. But I apologize, I hope I didn’t offend you in anyway.”

Letterman then joked that since the documentary ended up not being an actual documentary, that due to his image and his program being on the show, he deserved money for the five minutes of video clips. Letterman told Phoenix, “It’s not my first rodeo. I want a little taste of this as well,” referring to getting some of the profit.”

Letterman told him that he wanted one million dollars, then Phoenix said that the situation would be worked out and asked if they could meet in private about the matter. Letterman said in response, “Yeah, we’ll go to one of your screening.”
