San Francisco (Obama.net)- Thursday, the President of the United States of America Barack Obama spoke to the United Nations General Assembly. While addressing a plethora of issues, Obama focused heavily on the peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Obama made it clear that now is the time to reach peace for the two nations that have had decades of conflict.
Obama told the United Nations, “Now is the time for the parties to help each other overcome this obstacle. Now is the time to build the trust and provide the time for substantial progress to be made. Now is the time for this opportunity to be seized, so that it doesn’t slip away.”
Obama’s speech really hit the leader of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas who was present at the meeting. No one was present on the Israeli side due to Thursday being a religious holiday for the state and its religion.
Obama spoke of his dream to have both Israel and Palestine live peacefully without conflict and how over the last year, he and his administration have worked vigorously with the Middle Eastern nations in order to reach the goals set out. Obama said that progress is being made despite problems between the two nations persisting among civilians.
Obama said that if the naysayers and pessimists have their way, then “Palestinians will never know the pride and dignity that comes with their own state. Israelis will never know the certainty and security that comes with sovereign and stable neighbors who are committed to co-existence. This Holy Land will remain a symbol of our differences instead of our common humanity.”
The President then made it clear that he will “refuse to accept that future.”
Obama also said that for true security to be existent in the Middle East, Palestine needs its own state so that there is no anger over Israel having the land that Palestinians have desired for years.
Obama also said that for Palestine to get what they want, they must be willing to work peacefully and become a partner of Israel, and stop being their enemy. He said, people “who long to see an independent Palestine ride must stop trying to tear Israel down.”
It goes without saying that the United States is backing Israel completely in being a state. And the United States is now pushing for peace talks to be successful so the Palestinian people could realize their dream of having a state of their own.
