Kenny McKinley of the Denver Broncos was only 23 years old when he died. He was found unconscious and dead on Monday in his home in Colorado. Reports from the scene say that it appears that McKinley used a gun to shot and kill himself.

The police report said, “Deputies discovered a male in the second floor master bedroom of the home and determined that male was decease. Although the death of Mr. McKinley appears to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot, the investigation into this matter…is ongoing.”

McKinley was a wide receiver for the National Football League squad. He was the fifth round pick and 141st overall selection of the Broncos in the 2009 NFL Draft. He attended the University of South Carolina and set multiple records for receiving. In Austell, Georgia, he was a star athlete for South Cobb High Scholl.

In his first year in Denver, McKinley played in half of the teams’ regular season games. In 2010, he was placed on the injured reserve just before the season got underway due to a knee injury.

Pat Bowlen, the president of the Broncos said on behalf of the team, “everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley. He was part of the Broncos family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.”

McKinley is the third Bronco in four years to tragically pass away. The team has recently lost Darrent Williams and Damien Nash as well.

The coach, Josh McDaniels said, “Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room. This is a tragic loss for our football team and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

As the start of a new NFL season has just begun, the death of McKinley is a sad note that will surely not being going away anytime in the near future for any fan of the sport.
