On Wednesday, President Barack Obama fielded numerous questions. The topics included the current situation in Iraq and health risks regarding the swine flu.
When asked if the raise in violence in Iraq would have any effect on his withdrawal plans, Obama said no. He promoted the successes of the new Iraqi government and that despite the rise in violence, levels are still significantly lower than previous years.
However, Obama did say that before the War in Iraq comes to an end, the division of oil revenues must be decided, more in depth decisions on the powers of the local governments, and a motion towards peace amongst the Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites.
Obama went on to express positivity towards his decisions on banning certain interrogation methods, such as waterboarding.
Then came questions on immigration. Obama stated that he is looking forward to working with Congress on progressing the system and improving it. Obama said of the current system, “We can’t continue with a broken immigration system. It’s not good for anybody.” Obama said that the movement towards reform in the immigration system could be expected to start by the end of this year.
Obama also stated that just because Mexico is the origin of the swine flu, he is not seeking to stop travel between the United States and Mexico, or to close the borders. Obama will be working with health officials to decide on the best options available for taking care of the issue. Furthermore, President Obama said that the $1.5 billion he requested from Congress is so that the health officials can follow the flu and have a better understanding of how to act on it.
With the ongoing issues in the world, health wise and economically, Obama said that he is happy with the forward movement of American’s, but not satisfied yet. President Obama, who is working vigorously to make progressions in the United States said, “You can expect an unrelenting, unyielding effort from this administration to strengthen our prosperity and our security in the second hundred days, and the third hundred days, and all the days after that. We are off to a good start. But it is just a start. I am proud of what we have achieved, but I am not content.”
Barack Obama has been the President of the United States of America for 100 days now. A look back at his work reveals an increased budget of $3.4 trillion for 2010, a $787 billion stimulus package, 19 executive orders, 14 new laws, visits around the world to strengthen America’s international relationships, and a high approval rating to boost.
Barack Obama has done a lot in his first 100 days in office, and if he stays true to his word, we can only expect much more from our President.
