San Francisco (Obama.net)- Friday night, President Barack Obama said he is in favor of the construction of a Muslim center and mosque in New York City, near the location where the Twin Towers used to stand. Obama instantly drew criticism about his being fine with a mosque being placed so close to ground zero considering the relation between Islam and the September 11 attacks in 2001.

President Obama told reporters this weekend that by backing the project, he was in no way “commenting on the wisdom” of it, but instead simply respecting the laws of the United States and the Constitution.

Obama made it clear that his comments were based on the equality of Americans and that just because the center will be a Muslim center and that there will be a mosque, does not stand as legitimate reasoning to not let the construction take place.

In his comment this weekend, Obama did not retract any of his statements from Friday evening.

Obama said that he “will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there.” Obama further said, “I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. In this country, we treat everybody equally and in accordance with the law, regardless of race, regardless of religion.”

Obama said that as long as the individuals backing the project abide by the law and local property rules and ordinances, then there is no reason to stop the construction of private property in New York City.

Some Republicans such as Peter King and Sarah Palin are questioning the construction. King claims that Obama’s “political correctness” should not be present and that a stance against the project should be taken. Palin simply questioned the wisdom behind the project, but did respect the right to construct the center, unlike King.

Obama understands the controversy surrounding the construction of a Muslim center so close to where the World Trade Center used to stand, but also understands the principles of the United States of America. And despite the selection of location for the project, President Obama will not bend the rules and oppress Muslim’s just to silence another issue.

  1. One thing that is not examined in this debate is how wonderful the US Islamic community is on the war on homegrown terror. A integrated Islamic community is a super source of information to the government. This does not happen in the UK due to widespread discrimination.
