When the great Lawrence Taylor got arrested in Ramapoo, New York on May 6th of last year, many football fans were worried that the NFL legend might be on his way to some serious jail time.
After more details about the case came out, people began to see Taylor’s side of the story and see why he did not really deserve to get major jail time due to his apparent lack of knowledge of the age of his female companion.
Then Taylor agreed to a plea deal and was sentenced on Tuesday.
Taylor, the NFL Hall of Famer, was lucky to receive just probation for six years.
He pled guilty to sexual misconduct in the form of two misdemeanors. He was also fined a total of $2,000 by Judge William Kelly.
Unfortunately for Taylor, despite avoiding time in a jail cell, he will be classified as a sex offender on April 12th.
Taylor was accused and charged with having sex with a girl that he later found out was only sixteen years of age. In addition to sleeping with the girl, he also paid her $300 for the encounter.
The girl claimed that she was not soliciting sex and was not a prostitute. Of the incident, she said, “I’m very upset about what Mr. Taylor did to me. I did not want to go to his hotel.”
She went on to say that she was not happy with the sentencing and wanted Taylor to go to prison for what he did to her. She said, “He took something very special from me. I’m not a prostitute. I’m a victim and I’m hurting.”
After the sentencing, Taylor’s lawyer Arthur Aidala released a statement on behalf of the NFL Hall of Famer. Aidala said, “Mr. Taylor wants to publicly apologize to his wife and family and fans. Mr. Taylor accepts responsibility for what he did and he did intend to patronize a prostitute. He did not intend to patronize an underage person.”
During the hard times, Taylor’s wife Lynette stood beside her husband and maintained that he was innocent of the charges. She told reporters that Lawrence Taylor never slept with the girl and especially that he did not rape anyone.
What truly happened in that hotel rooms last year is something we might never know. But what we do know is that Lawrence Taylor will not be spending time in jail.
