Every year, the White House holds the White House Correspondents dinner. The President of the United States is always in attendance for the occasion.
2,600 people came to the Washington Hilton for the event. Journalists were plentiful at the Hilton. They were joined by the likes of Robert Gates, the Secretary of Defense, House Speaker John Boehner, and Bill Daley, the White House Chief of Staff.
Entertainers were also present.
The event is often a chance for the Head of State to relax a little bit and have some fun. Often times, the dinner party becomes more of a friendly roast than a formal gathering.
And of course the President is not going to not take part in the fun joking around.
Obama took friendly shots at everyone during his speech. One notable person he made a few cracks about was the man who has been working nonstop to run Obama’s name through mud over the last few weeks: Donald Trump.
Trump has been making the media rounds lately making the claim that Obama was not really born in the United States. Despite a great deal of evidence proving the contrary, Trump did not let up and continued his verbal bashing.
Last week Obama presented the piece of evidence that even Donald Trump could not ignore: his birth certificate.
To make light of the situation, Obama played a clip from “The Lion King” film where Simba is first presented to the community and said that the footage was of his birth.
Obama then spoke directly about Trump. Obama jokingly touted Trump for his decision-making abilities about whom to fire on his television program, “The Apprentice.”
The President did credit Trump with taking on important matters like pressing him into releasing his birth certificate. Obama then said, “Now he can focus on more important matters like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?”
Obama then really made Trump look like a joke when he sarcastically said that if Trump was really on to something about Obama’s place of birth, then maybe other politicians are not American born either.
Obama ended his speech by paying respect to journalists who put their lives on the line to bring the stories that matter to the American public. Obama’s focus was mainly on reporters who are in harms way in the Middle East and that were in the Southeast during the terrible storms that occurred last week.
