MTV Unplugged is a special that MTV puts on from time to time. The show showcases the talents of various musical artists. The performances are intimate. The shows are filmed in small venues without flashing lights or fancy musical equipment to enhance the artist’s vocals. MTV Unplugged is just that, unplugged. The shows consist of the just the artist and a band.
Artists who have been featured on Unplugged include Elton John, Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam, Duran Duran, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Seal, Erykah Badu, Alanis Morissette, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Korn, and Bon Jovi. Arguably, the two best performances on the series that began in 1989 belong to Alice in Chains and Nirvana.
June 12th another artist is going to be added to the legendary list. That man’s name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., or as he is better known by his fans, Lil Wayne.
With three hit singles out for his highly anticipated album, Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne’s performance is expected to be widely viewed.
Hip hop and rap artists are not often featured on the MTV program, but Wayne’s star is so big and his talent is so deep that not allowing the Grammy Award Winner to perform on the show would simply be unacceptable.
The show was taped in Culver City, California in May. After the filming was completed, Wayne told the media, “It’s very intimate and they damn sure picked the right artist to do it because if you’re not a full artist, you can’t do that. You can’t do an Unplugged. You have to be a full circle artist. You have to have everything because it’s so intimate. And if there are any flaws, they will be spotted.”
Sunday night, at 9 pm Eastern Time, Wayne will join the likes of Jay-Z, LL Cool J, and De La Soul as some of the few rappers to be on the series.
Wayne is without a doubt the hottest act in the hip-hop world today and arguably the top act in all of music. With Tha Carter III still getting solid airplay and Tha Carter IV already being touted as potentially his best album ever, Lil Wayne is the talk of the music world.
The buzz around the performance is that Wayne was flawless and brought out the best of his skills that solidify his seat at the top of the music industry. It would not come as a surprise if come the end of the show, Lil Wayne’s Unplugged episode goes down as one of the best of all time.
