In the biggest upset of the day so far, the Louisville basketball team was eliminated from the 2011 men’s NCAA basketball tournament by Morehead State. The number four seed Louisville Cardinals lost 62-61 to thirteen seeded Morehead State when Demonte Harper hit a three point shot with only 4.2 seconds remaining. Louisville desperately tried to get a game winning shot off in the closing seconds, but was unable to get a good attempt.
This loss comes as a big shock to the Louisville players and fans as the Big East Conference team was hoping to make a deep run in this year’s tournament. Fans were excited about the Cardinals chances after making it to the Big East Conference Tournament finals the previous weekend, but ultimately did not have what it takes to win the game today. Louisville really started to struggle when its star player Preston Knowles left the game in the second half with a sprained toe. Once he left the game, Morehead State made a run and was able to overcome an eight point deficit in the closing minutes.
Morehead State will play the winner of five seed Vanderbilt and twelve seed Richmond on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.
