In the midst of national crisis during the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama has shed a small ray of positive light on the nation.
During this time of ramped problems in the world and the United States, Obama has directed attention to a recent event worth celebrating. And that event is the crowning of the 2009-2010 National Basketball Association Champions.
In a series for the ages, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in seven games to win the NBA Championship for the 16th time in team history. That leaves the Lakers only one title behind Boston for the most all time.
The Lakers won their second straight championship Thursday evening in a highly defensive game that ended in a score of 83-79.
Friday, the President made a phone call to Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. Obama praised the Lakers and congratulated them on their championship. He also touted Jackson for securing his eleventh championship as a coach, an NBA record. Jackson has won five with the Los Angeles Lakers, all five with Kobe Bryant, and his first six with Obama’s favorite team, the Chicago Bulls, led by NBA legend Michael Jordan.
Obama further stated that he looks forward to congratulating the team once more when they make their trip to the White House.
In this time of turmoil in the United States, President Barack Obama has brought some relief to the American people by addressing the NBA Championship and changing the focus from disaster to sport, even if it was just for a few minutes Friday.
