2009 Barack Obama Inauguration Events

President-elect Barack Obama will be sworn in tomorrow January 20th, 2009 being our first African-American President sworn into office.  With the inauguration theme being “A New Birth of Freedom”, the inauguration is expected to bring an unprecedented crowd of over two million people.  The theme of the inauguration commemorates the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln.  The inauguration will be a momentous event that should not be missed.  The country is ready for a new change to our government, and the coming events will reflect our hope for a fresh beginning under a new administration.

Saturday, January 17th

The official inauguration events have already been underway when President-elect Barack Obama and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden traveled by train with their families passing through Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore as they make their way to Washington D.C.  The train ride is a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln who travelled by charter train before his inauguration.

Sunday, January 18th

Thousands attended the star studded pre-inauguration concert at the Lincoln Memorial where music giants such as Beyonce, Garth Brooks, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Usher, Stevie Wonder, and Jon Bon Jovi performed.

Monday, January 19th

Martin Luther King’s Birthday is celebrated alongside the inauguration festivities.

Michelle Obama and Jill Biden host a “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future” event at the Verizon Center.  Disney’s Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus and Disney Channel boy band, The Jonas Brothers, honor military families in concert.

Tuesday, January 20th

The official inauguration will take place at 10AM EST at the United States Capital.

The Obamas will officially attend a whopping ten inaugural balls, including the first “Neighborhood Inaugural Ball”.  Being the first inaugural ball of its kind, the ball will be open to residents of the Washington D.C. area.

Musical acts of the various balls will include Mariah Carey, Sting, Elvis Costello, Young Jeezy, Ashley Judd, Mary J. Blige, T.I., Chaka Khan, Melissa Ethridge, and L.L. Cool J.
