Obama’s Sanctions Go Unattended

On Sunday, June 27th, 2010 in Energy, Foreign Affairs, News by Mark Ryabtsev.

The recent sanctions on Iran added onto the previous United Nations sanctions by the United States have been brushed aside by the Middle Eastern state.

President Barack Obama and his administration felt the original UN sanctions were not sufficient to truly persuade Iran to end their nuclear weapons program and uranium enrichment. Thus, the United States added new sanctions, mainly blacklisting certain corporation, organizations, and individuals.

However, Iran’s parliament disagrees. Iranian officials claim that the sanctions would harm the United States in return because of the business limitations. Alaeddin Boroujerdi of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said, “The U.S. move to impose sanctions on Iran is in fact imposing sanctions on their own firms.”

The proposed bill was announced this past Thursday and is scheduled to be signed by President Obama shortly.

Iran claims that it’s nuclear aspirations are purely peaceful and are in no way violent threats to the rest of the world. Iran also says that it has the oil and gas to continue running their nation as they have in the past even if the sanctions go into effect.

President Obama and his cabinet are working hard with the United Nations and other states in the world to get Iran to relinquish all nuclear weapons programs. Despite Iran’s claims that the nuclear plants are not for the construction of weapons, the history of the Iranian government and the reputation of current Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggest otherwise.
